Shaving cream marbling is the easiest way to make swirly, one-of-a-kind paper. No special marbling size, no water bath, no mess you cannot wipe up. Jackie of Happy Hooligans makes it with her kids all the time, using a can of foam, a few bottles of liquid watercolour and a baking tray. Every sheet comes out different, which is half the fun.

How to marble paper with shaving cream: the short version

  • Spread foaming shaving cream evenly over a baking tray.
  • Drip liquid watercolour or food colouring over the top.
  • Swirl the colours with a craft stick.
  • Press paper onto the foam, lift it, and scrape the foam off.
  • Let it dry flat, then make the next sheet from the same tray.

Which shaving cream and colours work

Use plain white foaming shaving cream, the cheap fluffy kind. Gel types and ones with moisturisers do not hold the colour on top in the same way. For colour, liquid watercolours give the brightest result. Food colouring works too and is easy to find. Acrylic paint thinned with a little water gives bolder, more opaque swirls, but it takes longer to dry.

Choosing paper

Plain printer paper works fine, as Jackie shows, and it is cheap enough to make a big stack. Cardstock is sturdier and curls less as it dries, so pick it if you plan to make cards or bookmarks. Watercolour paper gives the crispest pattern of all.

Getting bold swirls instead of mud

Swirl less than you think. A few passes with the stick give clear ribbons of colour. Keep going and everything blends to one muddy shade. Pick two or three colours that look good mixed, such as pink, purple and blue, or yellow, green and blue. When the tray starts to look washed out, drip in a little fresh colour rather than starting over.

Drying and flattening

The paper dries quickly, usually within an hour. Lay it on a baking sheet or a covered table. If it curls, press it under a few heavy books overnight. The colour sits on the surface, so give it a full dry before you write on it or glue it down.

What to make with marbled paper

Common mistakes

  • Faint colour. Too little dye on the foam, or the paper lifted too fast. Add more drops and let the sheet sit a few seconds longer.
  • Smudged swirls. The paper slid as you pressed it. Lower it straight down and press with flat fingers.
  • Bare patches. The foam was uneven. Smooth the tray with your card before the next sheet.
  • Stained hands. Liquid watercolour washes off skin with soap, but gloves help with darker shades.

A kids' activity with a bonus

Children love the feel and the smell, and they get a little mucky, which is part of the fun. Put a towel under the tray, roll up sleeves, and keep wipes close. One tray of foam makes a whole stack of paper, so everyone gets several turns.

1

Gather Liquid Watercolours and Shaving Cream for Marbled Paper

Step 1: Gather Liquid Watercolours and Shaving Cream for Marbled Paper - How to Marble Paper With Shaving Cream - Easy Kids Craft

You need liquid watercolours or food colouring, a can of white foaming shaving cream, and a baking tray with a rim. Add a craft stick or a wooden skewer for swirling, and an old gift card, credit card or piece of cardboard for scraping. Jackie also pours her colours into an ice cube tray and uses droppers, though you can drip straight from the bottle.

Tip

Cover the table with a towel or an old cloth before you start.

2

Spray Foaming Shaving Cream Onto a Baking Tray

Spray the shaving cream across the baking tray until you have mounds covering most of the bottom. Use the white foaming kind, not gel. Kids love doing this part, so hand them the can. Aim for enough foam to make a layer about half an inch to an inch deep once it is spread out flat.

Tip

A tray slightly larger than your paper makes it easier to get full coverage.

3

Spread the Shaving Cream Flat With a Plastic Card

Take your plastic card and spread the foam evenly over the tray, the way you would ice a cake. You want a smooth, fairly level surface so the paper touches the colour everywhere when you press it down. It does not need to be perfect. A few ridges are fine and can even add texture to the pattern.

Tip

An expired gift card is the ideal spreader. It is stiff, thin and free.

4

Drip Liquid Watercolour Over the Shaving Cream

Now drip your colours all over the shaving cream. Jackie starts with red, then adds pink, purple and blue until the white is dotted with colour. Use the colours full strength for a bold result, or water them down a little for a softer, pastel look. Spread the drops across the whole tray so every part of the paper picks up colour.

Tip

Two or three colours that blend nicely give cleaner results than a whole rainbow.

5

Swirl the Colours Through the Shaving Cream With a Craft Stick

Take a craft stick or skewer and drag it through the drops in loops and zigzags. The colours stretch into ribbons and feathers across the foam. Keep going until the whole tray is swirled, but stop before it all turns one colour. The white gaps between the streaks are what make the marbled pattern stand out.

Tip

Try straight lines one way, then the other, for a feathered pattern.

6

Press a Sheet of Paper Onto the Marbled Shaving Cream

Lay a sheet of paper on top of the shaving cream. Printer paper works fine, and cardstock works too. Gently press it down with your fingertips all over so the whole sheet touches the foam. Do not push hard or slide it around, or the pattern smears. You only want good contact from edge to edge.

Tip

Lower the paper from one side to the other to avoid trapping air bubbles.

7

Lift the Paper Off the Shaving Cream Tray

3:19

Peel the paper up from one corner and lift it off the tray. The underside comes up coated in coloured foam, and you can already see the swirls showing through. Lay it foam side up on the table. Jackie lets it sit for a few seconds so the colour has a moment to soak into the paper before she scrapes.

Tip

A short wait gives deeper colour. A few seconds is plenty.

8

Scrape the Shaving Cream Off to Reveal the Marbled Paper

Hold the paper flat and drag your card across it to scrape the foam away. Wipe the card on the edge of the tray between passes. Underneath, the colour stays on the paper in crisp marbled swirls. Set it on a baking sheet or a covered table to dry. It dries quickly, usually within the hour.

Tip

Scrape in one direction only so you do not smear the pattern.

9

Add Fresh Colour to the Shaving Cream for the Next Sheet

5:30

You can keep using the same tray. Press a second sheet onto the foam, lift it and scrape it as before. As the pattern starts to fade, drip in a little more colour and give it a light swirl. You do not need much, because the tray already has a good base. A few new drops bring the definition back.

Tip

Make a test sheet each time you add colour so you can see how it has changed.

10

Smooth the Coloured Shaving Cream for a Softer Marbled Design

6:12
Step 10: Smooth the Coloured Shaving Cream for a Softer Marbled Design - How to Marble Paper With Shaving Cream - Easy Kids Craft

For a calmer look, drag your card across the coloured foam to smooth it flat. This blends the swirls into long streaks, and the next sheet comes out softer and more subtle. Drip in a few new colours if you like. Keep working the same tray, refreshing it as you go, until the shaving cream is used up.

Tip

Save the softer sheets for backgrounds. They make lettering easier to read.
