Based on a video by Eating on a Dime.

Once you make thousand island dressing at home, you will not want to buy the bottled kind again. Carrie from Eating on a Dime put this one together after testing it more times than she can count, all to nail that classic tangy, slightly sweet flavor. Even her sister, who says she doesn't like thousand island, came around after one taste.

The whole thing takes about two minutes of hands-on work. You mince a little onion, then stir together mayo, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, and a few seasonings right in one bowl. No cooking, no fancy tools. After a short chill in the fridge, it's ready to spoon over a salad or spread on a burger.

It also happens to be cheaper than the store-bought stuff and keeps in the fridge for a week or so. If you like making your own condiments and dressings, try our homemade ranch dressing next.

Step 1: Finely Mince the Onion

Step 1: Step 1: Finely Mince the Onion

You only need about 2 teaspoons of onion for the whole batch, so a small piece is plenty. Shave thin slivers off the onion with your knife, then lay them flat and rock the blade through the pile until the pieces are very fine. Because this is a dressing, you want the onion small enough that no one bites into a big chunk.

Keep running your knife through it, scooping the pile back together and chopping again, until it turns into a fine, even mince. If chopping onion isn't your thing, dried onion flakes work too. Use the same 2 teaspoons and the flavor still comes through.

Tip

Watch this step To get a really fine mince, hold the tip of your knife down on the board and rock the handle up and down, bouncing across the pile a few times.

2

Step 2: Add the Mayonnaise and Onion

3:11
Step 2: Step 2: Add the Mayonnaise and Onion

Scoop the minced onion into a mixing bowl. Then add 1 cup of mayonnaise. Use real mayonnaise for this, not Miracle Whip, because that's what gives the dressing its rich, classic base. Miracle Whip is sweeter and tangier and will throw off the flavor.

The mayo is the backbone of the whole recipe, so it's worth measuring a full, level cup. Everything else builds on top of it from here.

Tip

Watch this step A wide, shallow bowl gives you room to whisk without slinging dressing over the sides once all the ingredients go in.

3

Step 3: Add the Ketchup, Vinegar, and Relish

3:29
Step 3: Step 3: Add the Ketchup, Vinegar, and Relish

Pour in 1/4 cup of ketchup, which gives thousand island its signature pinkish-orange color. Add 1 teaspoon of white vinegar for a little brightness. Then spoon in about 2 tablespoons of sweet pickle relish.

The relish is what makes it taste like thousand island rather than a plain pink sauce. It adds that sweet, tangy bite and little flecks of texture in every scoop. If you like it chunkier, you can nudge the relish up a touch.

Tip

Watch this step Level off the relish in the spoon instead of heaping it. Too much and the dressing turns overly sweet and loose.

4

Step 4: Season with Salt and Paprika

3:36
Step 4: Step 4: Season with Salt and Paprika

Add 1/4 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of paprika. The paprika deepens the color and rounds out the flavor without adding any heat, so don't skip it even if you're not usually a paprika person.

These small amounts make a real difference, so measure them rather than eyeballing. A little seasoning is what takes the dressing from flat to full-flavored.

Tip

Watch this step Keeping your everyday seasonings in small open jars makes moments like this quick. You can pinch out exactly what you need without wrestling a shaker lid.

5

Step 5: Mix Until Smooth

3:56
Step 5: Step 5: Mix Until Smooth

Stir everything together until the dressing turns an even, creamy pink with no streaks of plain mayo left. A whisk does a thorough job, but a spatula works fine too since there's nothing here that needs beating.

Scrape around the sides and bottom of the bowl so the ketchup and relish get fully worked in. Give it a quick taste and adjust the salt if you like. That's it, the dressing is basically done.

Tip

Watch this step Taste before it goes in the fridge. Chilling mutes flavors slightly, so if it tastes just right now, it'll be a hair milder once cold.

6

Step 6: Chill, Then Drizzle and Serve

5:12
Step 6: Step 6: Chill, Then Drizzle and Serve

Cover the bowl and chill the dressing for one to two hours. This lets all the flavors settle in together and gets it cold, the way thousand island is meant to be served. It thickens as it rests, so give it a quick stir before you use it.

Drizzle it over a fresh salad, or spread it on a burger or wrap. A lot of restaurant burger sauces are basically thousand island, so use it anywhere you'd want that creamy, tangy hit. Store leftovers in an airtight jar in the fridge for about a week.

Tip

Watch this step It sets up thick and spoonable straight from the fridge. If you want a thinner, pourable drizzle for salads, stir in a teaspoon of water or vinegar to loosen it.
