A Christmas slider card has a little secret. Pull the red tab and Santa's sleigh flies across a snowy night sky, right over a sleeping village. Nina-Marie Trapani shows how she built this one on her Nina-Marie Trapani YouTube channel. It is a twist on the penny slider. Two pennies ride in a curved slot, and a pull tab lets you steer the sleigh instead of tilting the card.

New to sliders? The general slider card technique is a good warm-up. Want to draw your own Santa instead of stamping him? Try how to draw Santa.

Card size and paper for a Christmas slider card

This card is a standard A2: 4.25 x 5.5 inches, turned sideways. Cut the sky panel a little smaller, about 4 x 5.25 inches, so a border of the card base shows. Use heavy cardstock (100 lb or 110 lb) for the sky panel and the base. Thin paper buckles under the paste and tears around the slot. A 5 x 7 card works too and gives the sleigh a longer ride.

Cutting the slot track without a slider die

No slider die? You can still do it.

  • Straight track. Draw two pencil lines 1/4 inch apart with a metal ruler. Cut them with a sharp craft knife on a cutting mat. Punch a 1/4 inch hole at each end to round them off.
  • Curved track. Use two nested circle dies about 1/4 inch apart in size, and cut only part of the arc. Or trace the edge of a dinner plate twice, the second line 1/4 inch lower, and cut with the craft knife.

If you own a die cutting machine, see how to use a die cutting machine for taping a die in place so it does not shift.

How to stop the slider snagging

  • The foam tape on each penny must be narrower than the slot. Cut tiny pieces.
  • Keep the foam tape walls on the back 1/4 to 1/2 inch away from the slot.
  • Use two pennies, one under each end of the image. The sleigh stays level and does not spin.
  • Scrape any dried paste or glitter off the slot edges with your fingernail.
  • Test the slide before you glue the panel down. It is much harder to fix later.

Envelope and mailing

A slider card is thick and stiff because of the pennies and foam tape. In the US it will likely need the extra non-machinable postage. Take one to the post office before you buy stamps for the whole list. A sturdy A2 envelope fits, or make your own with this paper envelope tutorial. A sheet of thin card inside protects the tab.

Variations

  • Colours. Purple and navy for a midnight sky, or pink and peach for sunrise.
  • Kid-friendly. Let a grandchild colour the sleigh with felt tips. A straight track is easier for small hands.
  • Quicker. Skip the paste and use a white gel pen to dot the snow.

Making a batch for your Christmas card list

Work in stages. Blend all the sky panels in one sitting, then do all the snow, then cut every slot. Stamp and colour the sleighs while the paste dries. An assembly line of ten cards takes far less time than ten cards made one by one.

1

Ink Blend a Night Sky Panel for the Christmas Slider Card

1:36
Step 1: Ink Blend a Night Sky Panel for the Christmas Slider Card - How to Make a Christmas Slider Card With Santa's Sleigh

Start with a panel of light blue cardstock. Blend a mid blue ink toward the middle, stopping short of the center so a soft glow stays there. Then bring in navy ink around the edges with a second brush. Go back over the join with the lighter blue to soften the line. Work in small circles and build the colour slowly. Dye inks smooth out as they dry, so do not panic about streaks.

Tip

Keep one brush for each ink colour so the navy does not muddy the light blue.

2

Spread Embossing Paste Through a Snow Stencil on the Night Sky

Tape the blended panel to the back of a falling snow stencil so nothing shifts. Scoop some white embossing paste onto a palette knife and spread it across the stencil. Nina-Marie leaves it fairly thick for raised snow you can feel. Scrape the extra back into the jar, then lift the stencil straight up. Wash the stencil and knife right away, before the paste dries on them.

Tip

Let the paste dry fully before you cut the slot. Wet paste smears and lumps snag the slider.

3

Add Glitter Drops to the Snowy Village Scene

Step 3: Add Glitter Drops to the Snowy Village Scene - How to Make a Christmas Slider Card With Santa's Sleigh

The village and the Santa sleigh are stamped on white cardstock, coloured with markers and fussy cut. Dab white glitter drops over the snow on the hillside and along the roofs. Add a touch to the sleigh runners too. Cover the house and church windows with a glossy clear medium so they shine like lit glass. Leave everything flat to dry before you handle it.

Tip

Any colouring tool works here. Markers, coloured pencils or watercolour all look good.

4

Die Cut the Curved Slot Track in the Christmas Card Panel

Step 4: Die Cut the Curved Slot Track in the Christmas Card Panel - How to Make a Christmas Slider Card With Santa's Sleigh

Lay the curved track die over the upper part of the sky and tape it down. Keep it high enough that the village will not cover the slot. Run it through your die cutting machine. No die? Cut two parallel lines 1/4 inch apart with a craft knife and a ruler, or follow the edges of two circle dies for a curve. Round the ends with a small hole punch.

Tip

Check that the track runs the length you want the sleigh to travel before you cut.

5

Attach the Village Scene Along the Bottom of the Slider Card

3:25

Put foam tape on the back of the village scene. Line it up along the bottom of the sky panel, under the slot, and press it down. The foam lifts the houses off the sky so the card has depth. Look at it from the front and make sure no rooftop or tree pokes into the path of the slot.

Tip

Trim the foam tape a little in from the edges so it does not show from the side.

6

Cut a Red Circle Pull Tab for the Santa Sleigh

3:42
Step 6: Cut a Red Circle Pull Tab for the Santa Sleigh - How to Make a Christmas Slider Card With Santa's Sleigh

Cut a small circle from red cardstock with a circle die. A coin or a bottle cap traced with a pencil works fine too. This is the tab you grab to pull the sleigh along. Hold it behind the reindeer to check the size. Nina-Marie wrote the word PULL on it in white so people know what to do.

Tip

Make the tab big enough to pinch with a thumb and finger. Older hands will thank you.

7

Build Foam Tape Walls Around the Slider Card Track

4:22
Step 7: Build Foam Tape Walls Around the Slider Card Track - How to Make a Christmas Slider Card With Santa's Sleigh

Turn the panel over. Cut small strips of foam tape and stick them around the slot to make a closed track. These walls stop the pennies sliding out past the ends of the card. Leave 1/4 to 1/2 inch of space between the foam and the slot on every side. That gap lets the pennies glide without rubbing.

Tip

Leave the liners on the outer foam strips for now. You will need them to mount the panel.

8

Stick Tiny Foam Pieces on the Pennies for the Slider

4:40
Step 8: Stick Tiny Foam Pieces on the Pennies for the Slider - How to Make a Christmas Slider Card With Santa's Sleigh

Cut two very small pieces of foam tape and press one onto each penny. They must be narrower than the slot so they move freely through it. The penny is wider than the slot, so it can never fall out. Drop each penny into the track from the back, foam side up through the opening.

Tip

Pennies are the classic choice, but any flat coin or metal washer of the same size works.

9

Attach the Santa Sleigh and Reindeer to the Pennies

5:16
Step 9: Attach the Santa Sleigh and Reindeer to the Pennies - How to Make a Christmas Slider Card With Santa's Sleigh

Glue the red pull tab behind the reindeer with strong double-sided tape. It gets pulled often, so do not skimp. Then flip the panel over and press the sleigh onto the foam on one penny and the reindeer onto the other. Two pennies keep the image level so Santa does not tip over as he travels. Slide it back and forth to test.

Tip

If it catches, find the spot and trim the foam on the penny smaller.

10

Mount the Panel and Add a Merry Christmas Sentiment

5:56
Step 10: Mount the Panel and Add a Merry Christmas Sentiment - How to Make a Christmas Slider Card With Santa's Sleigh

Stick the finished panel onto a light blue A2 card base with the foam walls. A blue that matches the sky ties it all together. Add a die-cut Merry Christmas sentiment along the same curve as the track. Then pull the red tab and watch Santa fly across the sky over the village. It is a card people keep playing with.

Tip

Keep the sentiment clear of the slot so it does not block the sleigh.
