Based on a video by The Halloween Sisters.

A giant yarn spider web turns a bare wall into Halloween decor for the price of one skein of yarn and a roll of tape. The Halloween Sisters show how they filled 72 square feet of dark gray living room wall with a white web. No crochet hook, no nails and no glue. You tape long strands into spokes, then knot rounds of yarn onto them from the center out.

It takes an afternoon. It is also forgiving: the first try in the video sagged, so she pulled it down and started again with a knot at every spoke. That fix is built into the steps below.

How to make a yarn spider web: the short version

  • Tape long yarn strands across the wall so they cross at one point.
  • Tie a small ball of yarn to the center.
  • Go round and round, tying a gentle knot on every spoke.
  • Make each round a little wider than the last until you reach the edge.
  • Re-tape any spoke ends that slip, then add spiders.

Picking yarn and tape

Choose a yarn color that stands out against your wall. White or cream on a dark wall reads from across the room. On a pale wall, try black or charcoal. Worsted weight acrylic is cheap, does not stretch much and shows up well. Thin yarn looks delicate up close but disappears at a distance.

Painters tape is the safe choice for painted walls. It holds for weeks and peels off clean. Packing tape grips harder but can pull paint when you take it down.

Sizing your web

Decide where the center goes before you tape anything. Off center often looks more natural, as if the spider started in a corner. For a door or a small wall, 8 spokes is plenty. A whole wall like the one here takes 12 to 16. Keep the gap between rounds about the same, roughly a hand's width near the center and a little wider toward the edge.

Keeping the web tight

Wrapping over and under the spokes without knots is quick, but it slides. The rounds slip toward the center and the whole thing droops. A loose single knot at each spoke locks the round in place. Tie it gently. Pull too hard and you drag the spoke out of line.

Work from a small ball, not the full skein. A long working strand tangles and tugs on the whole web each time you pull it through.

Ideas for using it

  • Stretch the web across a front porch corner or between two posts.
  • Make a small one on a door with a big plastic spider at the center.
  • Use glow in the dark yarn for a party room.
  • Let grandkids tie the knots on the low rounds while you handle the high ones.

Common problems

  • Spokes pulling out from the tape. Pull the strand a little tighter, tape it, fold the end back over the tape and tape it a second time.
  • Rounds sliding to the center. Knot every spoke, not every other one.
  • A lopsided web. Step back after each round and look from across the room.

1

Tape Long Yarn Strands Across the Wall for the Spider Web Spokes

Step 1: Tape Long Yarn Strands Across the Wall for the Spider Web Spokes - How to Make a Yarn Spider Web Decoration for Halloween

Cut long pieces of yarn, each long enough to cross the whole area you want the web to cover. Tape one end to the wall, stretch the strand across the center point and tape the other end. Add more strands the same way, all crossing at one spot. This frame of spokes holds up the whole spider web, so pull each one snug before you tape it.

Tip

Mark the center lightly with a small piece of tape so every strand crosses in the same spot.

2

Check the Yarn Spider Web Spokes Meet at One Center Point

Step back and look at your spokes. They should fan out like the spokes of a bike wheel, with roughly even gaps between them. Here about twelve strands meet in one small hub. If one is off, peel the tape, shift it and press it down again. Getting the spokes right now saves a lot of fiddling later.

Tip

Uneven gaps are fine. Real spider webs are never perfect.

3

Tie a Small Ball of Yarn to the Spider Web Center

Wind off a small ball of yarn, about the size of a lemon, so it is easy to pass between the spokes. Tie the loose end around the strands right at the center hub. A double knot is good here, since everything else builds out from this point. Trim the short tail with scissors so it does not show.

Tip

Wind a fresh small ball when this one runs out instead of working from the skein.

4

Pass the Yarn Ball Around Each Spoke for the First Web Round

Work a tight first round close to the center. Take the yarn ball to the next spoke, pass it behind the spoke and bring it back over the front. Move on to the next spoke and repeat, going all the way around. The first round is small, so keep it close to the hub. You will see a little ring start to form.

Tip

Always travel in the same direction, clockwise or counterclockwise, so the rounds look even.

5

Tie a Gentle Knot on Every Spoke of the Yarn Web

Here is the fix for a web that sags. Each time the round reaches a spoke, tie one gentle knot around it before moving on. The knot locks that round in place so it cannot slide toward the center. Keep the knots light. If you pull hard you will tug the spoke out of line and the web goes crooked.

Tip

If a round sags anyway, undo back to the last good knot and tie it again.

Build the Inner Rings of the Yarn Spider Web

Keep going round and round, knotting at each spoke. Make every round a little wider than the one before. After a few rounds the center starts to look like a real spider web. Keep the gap between rounds about the same each time. A hand's width is a good guide near the center, a bit more as you move out.

Tip

Stand back every couple of rounds to check the spacing from a distance.

7

Knot the Outer Rounds of the Giant Yarn Spider Web

As the web grows, the rounds get long and you will be reaching high and low. Use a step stool for the top. If a spoke starts slipping out from under its tape, pull it a little tighter, tape it, fold the end back over the tape and tape it again. Keep adding rounds until you reach the size you want, then tie off and trim.

Tip

Leave the outermost spoke ends a bit loose and wispy. It looks more like a real web.

Decorate the Finished Yarn Spider Web for Halloween

Step back and enjoy your giant spider web. Now dress it up. Tuck a few plastic spiders into the rounds, or set a large spider near the center. Here a skeleton hand reaches up in front of the web for a spooky touch. When Halloween is over, peel the tape off slowly and wind the yarn for next year.

Tip

A few spiders go a long way. Two or three look better than a crowd.
