A mosaic house number plaque makes your address easy to spot and gives the front door a handmade welcome. This round sign has the number in white tile, a blue sky, a row of pastel flowers and a crisp white border. YouTube maker Angelica made it as her very first mosaic, which shows how forgiving the craft is. You need tiles, nippers, a waterproof board, adhesive and grout.

How to make a mosaic house number plaque: the short version

  • Sketch the design on paper and count your colors.
  • Practice nipping tiles, then draw the circle and number on a waterproof board.
  • Lay and glue the border and number in white squares.
  • Fill in flowers, then sky and grass, gluing as you go.
  • Grout, wipe clean and let it cure before hanging.

Make the number big enough to read

A house number is only useful if a delivery driver can read it from the street. Make the digits at least 4 inches tall, and use a light color against a darker or busier background. White on blue reads well. Angelica's one regret was not making her number bigger, so draw it larger than feels right. A two digit number fits a 12 inch circle. Three or four digits suit a long rectangle better.

Choosing a board for outdoors

An outdoor sign needs a waterproof base. Wood swells and the tiles pop off after a winter. Foam tile backer board or cement board is the safer choice, and the rough surface grips the adhesive. Foam board cuts with a sharp utility knife, so you can trim it round after tiling. The back of a large floor tile also works as a base.

Picking tiles

Plain glazed ceramic wall tiles are cheap and easy to nip. Buy a few 6 inch squares in each color, and keep every tile the same thickness so the surface stays level. Practice on a spare tile first. Use the corner of the nippers for small pieces, and remember each tile breaks a little differently.

How long it takes

Plan on a full weekend. Sketching and drawing the board take an hour. Cutting and gluing the pieces is the long part, often six to eight hours for a 12 inch sign. Let the adhesive dry overnight before you grout, then give the grout a day or two before the sign goes outside. Working outdoors on a warm day makes the cutting much more pleasant.

Hanging and weatherproofing

  • Glue strong picture hooks to the back before you tile, or mount the whole plaque with exterior construction adhesive.
  • Grout the edges too, so no board shows.
  • Seal the grout once it cures. See how to seal a mosaic for outdoor use.

Common mistakes

  • Gluing everything at the end. Pieces shift while you work. Glue each section once it is laid.
  • Uneven gaps. Keep the spaces between pieces about the same so the grout lines look tidy.
  • Pieces at different heights. Press each one down to match its neighbors.

What you'll need

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Sketch the Mosaic House Number Design on Paper

Step 1: Sketch the Mosaic House Number Design on Paper - How to Make a Mosaic House Number Plaque

Start on paper. Draw the shape of your sign, the border, the number and the background. Angelica goes for a round sign with white border squares, the number in the middle and a landscape behind it: blue sky on top, green grass below and flowers between. Note the colors on the sketch. It tells you how many tiles of each color to buy.

Tip

Draw the number bigger than you think. It needs to read from the street.

2

Practice Nipping Ceramic Tiles for the Mosaic

If you have never cut tile, practice on an old tile of the same thickness first. Hold the tile with one hand and bite into the edge with the tile nippers. For tiny pieces, use only the corner of the jaws. It feels awkward at first and gets easier fast. You can also tap a tile with a hammer inside a bag to break it into big pieces.

Tip

Wear safety glasses. Small chips can fly when the tile snaps.

3

Draw the Circle and Border on the Backer Board

Step 3: Draw the Circle and Border on the Backer Board - How to Make a Mosaic House Number Plaque

Use a waterproof board for an outdoor sign, like foam tile backer board. Trace around a bucket or a plate to draw the circle with a marker. Then draw a second, slightly smaller circle inside it. The gap between the two lines is where the border squares go, so make it the width of one tile piece.

Tip

Leave the board square for now. Trim it round once the tiles are on.

4

Outline the House Number Inside the Circle

Draw the number in the middle of the circle with the marker. Make the strokes about the width of a tile square so you can fill each line with a single row of pieces. Check the spacing between the digits and keep them centered. These lines are your guide for the white tiles in the next steps.

Tip

Print the number in a bold font and trace it if freehand feels tricky.

5

Cut and Lay the White Border Squares

Nip white tiles into small squares and lay them along the border line, one beside the next. Keep the gaps between them even. Then fill the number lines the same way. Lay everything dry first so you can see the whole border and number before any glue goes on, and adjust pieces until the curve looks smooth.

Tip

Slightly wedge shaped pieces help the squares follow the curve of the circle.

6

Glue the Border and Number Tiles in Place

Glue the white pieces before you start the rest. Pick up one piece at a time, spread a little exterior tile adhesive on the back with a plastic spatula, and press it back into exactly the same spot. Press gently so the glue spreads and every piece sits at the same height. Keep the gaps even as you go.

Tip

Gluing section by section stops pieces sliding around while you work on the next area.

7

Nip Flower Petals From Colored Tiles

Now the flowers. Cut small triangles from orange tile for the centers and longer pieces with pointed ends from pink and yellow tile for the petals. Lay each flower out on the table first, then move it onto the board. Once the flowers look right, glue them down the same way as the border pieces.

Tip

Nip a point by taking two small angled bites off one end of a strip.

8

Fill the Mosaic Sky and Grass Around the Flowers

7:37

Fill the background last. Work from the border inward, cutting blue pieces for the sky and green pieces for the grass to fit each gap. This is the slow part, so settle in. Glue each area as you finish it, and let the whole piece dry overnight. Then trim the board round with a sharp knife.

Tip

Two shades of blue and green make the background look richer than one.

9

Grout the Mosaic House Number Plaque

9:00
Step 9: Grout the Mosaic House Number Plaque - How to Make a Mosaic House Number Plaque

Mix powdered grout with water until it is like thick peanut butter. Wear gloves. Spoon some onto the mosaic and spread it with a rubber float, pressing it into every gap. Work in all directions. Grout the cut edge of the board with a small putty knife too, so the sign looks like solid stone.

Tip

Gray grout makes bright colors pop and hides dirt better outdoors than white.

10

Sponge the Grout Off the Mosaic Plaque

9:44
Step 10: Sponge the Grout Off the Mosaic Plaque - How to Make a Mosaic House Number Plaque

Let the grout firm up for 15 to 20 minutes, then wipe the surface with a damp sponge. Rinse the sponge often and wipe lightly so you do not drag grout out of the gaps. The colors and the number come back as you go. Buff any haze with a dry cloth once it dries, then hang your sign by the door.

Tip

Wring the sponge out well. Too much water weakens the grout lines.
