A leaky faucet wastes water and money. This guide walks you through the most common fix — replacing the cartridge or washer — with no plumbing experience required.
Locate the shutoff valves under the sink. Turn both the hot and cold valves clockwise until they stop.
Tip
If the valves are stuck, spray WD-40 and wait 10 minutes before trying again.
Pop off the decorative cap on the handle, then unscrew the handle screw with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the handle off.
Pull out the old cartridge or washer. Take it to the hardware store to find an exact match. Insert the new one in the same orientation.
Put the handle back on, tighten the screw, and replace the decorative cap. Turn the water supply back on and check for leaks.
Tip
Let the water run for 30 seconds and check under the sink for any drips.
