Ten photo steps for beginners.","totalDurationSeconds":548,"difficulty":"medium","tools":["glass grinder","3/4 inch grinder bit","safety glasses","cut-resistant gloves","spray bottle","craft knife"],"materials":["cut stained glass pieces","printed pattern","clear packing tape","sticker paper or removable vinyl","permanent marker"],"steps":[{"number":1,"title":"Fill the Glass Grinder Water Reservoir","text":"Pour clean water into the grinder's reservoir until it reaches the sponge or the wick under the bit. Then set the grid work surface back on top. Water is not optional. It keeps glass dust out of the air, cools the bit and stops the glass from cracking from heat. A grinder with a self-watering bit pulls water up to the grinding surface on its own."},{"number":2,"title":"Tape Over the Stained Glass Pattern to Keep It Dry","text":"Keep a printed copy of your pattern beside the grinder. You will set each ground piece on it to check the fit. Cover the front of the paper with clear packing tape so wet glass does not soak it. Number the pattern pieces so you can match each glass piece to its spot at a glance."},{"number":3,"title":"Put On Safety Glasses and Gloves Before Grinding Glass","text":"Safety glasses go on before the grinder switches on. Small chips fly off the bit and you will not see them coming. Amaya wears thin disposable gloves with coated work gloves on top. Well-fitted cut-resistant gloves are better still. A mask is up to you. With enough water on the bit, there should be no dust to breathe."},{"number":4,"title":"Knock the Sharp Edges Off the Cut Glass Piece","text":"Switch the grinder on. Before you shape anything, run every edge of the cut glass piece lightly along the spinning bit. This takes off the razor edges and needle points left by the glass cutter. Now when you grip the piece hard to work one side, the other edges will not dig into your fingers."},{"number":5,"title":"Grind the Glass Piece to the Pattern Sticker Line","text":"Push the glass gently against the bit and slide it along the edge. Keep the piece flat on the grid. Grind up to the line of your pattern sticker and stop there. Sticker paper or removable vinyl works better than glued paper, because it does not slide around or wash off, so you can grind right to the edge."},{"number":6,"title":"Keep the Grinder Bit and Glass Wet With a Spray Bottle","text":"The bit needs a steady film of water the whole time. If yours is set high or the sponge is drying out, mist the glass and bit with a spray bottle as you work. Amaya's bit is stuck at one height, so she holds the piece up and sprays it. Dry grinding throws dust and can crack the glass."},{"number":7,"title":"Check the Ground Glass Piece Against the Pattern","text":"Set the piece on its numbered spot on the taped pattern. It should sit inside the lines with a hair of space around it for copper foil and solder. If an edge rides over the line, mark that high spot with a marker and grind only there. Check after every few passes instead of grinding a lot at once."},{"number":8,"title":"Grind the Curved Edges of the Stained Glass Piece","text":"For curves, keep the glass flat and rotate it slowly against the bit so the contact point rolls along the curve. Do not push straight in or you will cut a flat spot. Tight inside curves are easier with a smaller bit. Hold still at points so you do not round them off."},{"number":9,"title":"Peel the Pattern Sticker Off the Ground Glass","text":"When the piece fits, peel off the pattern sticker. A craft knife helps lift a corner. Run a finger along the edges. You want a smooth, matte, frosted finish all the way round with no shiny spots and no chips. Wipe the piece clean and dry so the copper foil sticks."},{"number":10,"title":"Clean the Glass Sludge Out of the Grinder Reservoir","text":"When the water has mostly evaporated, scrape the glass sludge out of the reservoir while it is still damp. Damp sludge stays put. Dry sludge turns to dust. Remove the bit when you are done so it does not seize. Never pour the water down a sink. The glass settles like sand in the pipes."}],"recipe":null,"lastUpdated":"2026-10-06T18:53:03.171Z","published":"2026-10-06T18:52:57.116Z","license":"CC BY 4.0.
