Start with simple shapes on an 8-head grid, then add the skull, ribs, spine, pelvis and limb bones.","totalDurationSeconds":936,"difficulty":"medium","tools":["0.5 mm mechanical pencil","clear plastic ruler","kneaded eraser","light box or tracing paper (optional)"],"materials":["sketchbook or drawing paper","pencil lead refills"],"steps":[{"number":1,"title":"Rule an 8 Head-Unit Proportion Grid for the Skeleton Drawing","text":"Draw a vertical centre line down the page and split it into eight equal sections with a ruler. Each section is one head unit. Add a line either side so the grid is two units wide, one unit left of centre and one right. Divide the top unit into thirds as well. That grid is the measuring stick for every bone that follows."},{"number":2,"title":"Draw the Skeleton Skull as a Circle and Jaw in the Top Unit","text":"In the top unit, draw a circle across the upper two thirds for the cranium. Use the bottom third for the jaw, a squarer block that tapers down to the chin. Leave out the eye sockets and teeth for now. This head is only a placeholder, and it sets the size of everything below it."},{"number":3,"title":"Box In the Skeleton Rib Cage Below the Neck","text":"Drop down one third of a unit for the neck and the top of the shoulders. Mark a box about one and a third units tall and one and a third wide. Inside it, draw the rib cage as an upside-down egg, wider at the top and narrowing to the waist. Add the arched opening at the bottom where the ribs part."},{"number":4,"title":"Sketch the Skeleton Pelvis as a Tapered Bucket Shape","text":"The next unit down holds the pelvis. Draw a box about the same width as the rib cage, then a bucket inside it that narrows toward the bottom. Cut a scooped section out of the front. It looks crude now, but those planes line up with the hip bones you will draw over it later."},{"number":5,"title":"Add the Skeleton Shoulder Girdle and Upper Arm Bones","text":"Draw the clavicles as two tubes running out from the top of the rib cage. Add the shoulder blades as curved triangles tucked behind. At the end of each clavicle, draw a small circle for the shoulder joint. From there, run the humerus down to about the bottom of unit three."},{"number":6,"title":"Draw the Forearm Bones and Simple Skeleton Hands","text":"Below the elbow, draw two bones side by side, the radius and the ulna. In this palms-forward pose they run parallel and end a little below the pelvis. Block the palm as one shape, then add the fingers as short blocks. At this size a simple hand reads better than every knuckle."},{"number":7,"title":"Draw the Skeleton Leg Bones, Knee Caps and Feet","text":"Put a circle at each side of the pelvis for the hip joint. Draw the femurs angling inward to the bottom of unit six. Add a small upside-down triangle for each knee cap, then the tibia and fibula down to a third of a unit above the bottom line. Finish with an ankle circle and a wedge for each foot."},{"number":8,"title":"Connect the Skull, Rib Cage and Pelvis With the Spine","text":"Finish the pelvis now that the legs show you where it needs to sit. Then draw the spine from the base of the skull, down through the rib cage, into the back of the pelvis. Make it thicker as it goes down, ending in the triangular sacrum. That is your full simplified skeleton."},{"number":9,"title":"Draw the Detailed Skull and Ribs Over the Simplified Skeleton","text":"Trace a light copy of your simplified skeleton onto a fresh page, or work over the original. Start at the top. Add eye sockets, nose and teeth to the skull, then the collarbones and sternum. Draw the ribs one pair at a time, curving round the egg shape. Press harder now so the final lines stand out."},{"number":10,"title":"Refine the Skeleton Pelvis, Vertebrae and Hand Bones","text":"Draw each vertebra as a small block, larger toward the pelvis. Shape the hip bones inside your bucket. Refine the radius and ulna, then the wrist bones and each finger joint. Work down the femurs, knees, shins and feet the same way. Mirror each side as you go so the skeleton stays even."}],"recipe":null,"lastUpdated":"2026-09-24T22:42:28.800Z","published":"2026-09-24T22:42:20.628Z","license":"CC BY 4.0.
